From my morning devotion:
Matthew 12:38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. 39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
also:
1 Corinthians 14:22,23 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
Seeking after signs is idolatry, which is spiritual adultery. Jesus came to (among other things) prophesy to the believer (Jews) and show signs to the unbeliever (gentiles).
Mark 9:38,39 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. 39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
Do not seek after sign doers, seek with all your heart and life after Jesus. Get into his word daily. Surround yourself with like minded people who are humble and meek. Guard your heart around unbelievers. Find the will of God for you life and then work diligently in the place where he has planted you.
Matthew 7:22-24 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
You will find people that cast out devils, heal the sick and speak in tongues. But that still doesn't mean you should be seeking in their direction. They might still be going to hell.
Matthew 7:15,20 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
There will be those in this day who seem to be so godly. They will put on an air of humility and meekness. After you've been around them a while and see the fruit of their life, you discover it's all false: their humility, their meekness, their righteousness. They're all pharisees. Following the letter of the law and seeking after signs. Mark them as such, walk away and seek God's will for your life.
Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Signs are supposed to follow the life of the believer, not the other way around.
Lord, I pray that you help us all to find an assembly of true believers. Plant us firmly in a house where we can worship you and become a true disciple. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
