Morning Meditations: The Law

From my morning devotion:

Matthew 5:13-16 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

also:

Acts 10:11-16,28 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. 14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. 16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven...28And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

Jesus wasn't speaking to his disciples alone, he was speaking to Jews in general. God set down in the law provision for converts. The Jews were meant to be a light on the hill. They took the law's prohibition against interracial marriage and perverted it into a reason not to hang around Gentiles.

In the quoted portion of Acts, God convicts Peter of his sin. This was not a repudiation of the law.

Lord, help us to be salt and light. Empower us to make converts of all people. In Jesus name, Amen.
